They say that one piece of log creates a small fire, adequate to warm you up, add just a few more pieces to blast an immense bonfire, large enough to warm up your entire circle of friends; needless to say, that individuality counts but teamwork dynamites.
For Sigalame High School located in Busia County, it was a dream come true as the old boys under their umbrella body, Sigalame High School Alumni Association converged to give back to their alma mater in a special way. On a day set aside to celebrate their milestones long after they cleared school, the inaugural Alumni Day held over the weekend provided a convenient platform for the old boys to speak to their young brothers on matters of career and life choices.
The highlight of the day was the launch of the Alumni Scholarship programme which will see the old boys support one bright but needy student by paying his school fees throughout the 4-year school cycle. This will be accompanied by regular mentorship sessions to enable the beneficiary to understand the dynamics of the outside world. The first beneficiary of the noble gesture is Lameck Aloo, a Form 2 student who emerged the best from the rigorous review process that considered a student’s level of economic need as well as his performance track record since Form 1. Speaking during the launch event, the Association Chairman, Paul Vincent Bwire noted that the gesture was a noble one as it had taken them over 3 years to make it a reality. “We are delighted to come back to our former school with the singular aim of supporting our younger brothers.
Through this scholarship fund, we see ourselves grooming the next crop of change-makers who will be instrumental in not only transforming their lives but also coming back to our school and supporting its growth endeavours,” Mr. Paul noted. Sigalame High School Alumni Association which was established in 2010 has continued to offer its members an opportunity to network and learn from one another as it looks to unlock more value from its membership. This has also seen the Association create an investment wing in the form of Sigalame Alumni Sacco that currently boasts of an asset base of Kshs. 6.7 million with over Kshs. 2.3 Million disbursed to members in the form of loans. The Association seeks to build on this unity of purpose to create a long-lasting impact amongst its membership as well as within the school community.
